Ludum Dare 50
The Jam – 72-hour deadline, solo or team, mostly from scratch, opting out of the Graphics or Audio categories if yours isn’t original.
Day 1:
This was our 9th attempt at Ludum Dare. We decided to work in Unity this time around, mostly for the collaboration tools. Our plan was to make a game where you try and prevent war by keeping trade relations stable and delaying the inevitable nuclear apocalypse (not ambitious at all.) We thought really hard about whether we wanted to actually try and math out curves on a globe and decided it was worth it almost purely for the aesthetics (whoops).
I spent the day designing the gameplay loop top-down based on our theme. We initially wanted to make an RTS, and it naturally evolved into a time-management game. Then I started figuring out what things were gonna look like overall. Nick got the globe spinning right away and spent the rest of the day doing the math to try and draw the curved rays.
Day 2:
We actually managed to get a lot of gameplay elements implemented on day two, but drawing the rays turned out to be a much bigger headache than anticipated and it slowed us way down. By the end of day two it was pretty clear that we weren’t going to finish before the deadline. Either way, it was a fun couple of days of designing and I’m glad we took on the challenge.
